[Videolib] media Reserves

Could you all weigh in about the reserve policies that I have seen
around that restrict consecutive semester (or quarter) reserves?

Some places say that leaving reserves on semester after semester is OK,
others claim that it is not OK and cite copyright law as the force
behind their "only for one semester" policy. Is there some portion of
the copyright law that restricts consecutive semester reserves? And is
it different for print and DVD/CD/VHS with regard to length of time on
reserve?
Thanks,
Ciara

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
