our library has decided to introduce an RFID checkout and control system
for all sorts of media. As far as I know there are problems to use RFID
tags on CDs and DVDs (we have a collection of 100.000 discs in all
formats !):
- the metal layer shields the tags so the security system won't work
properly
- adhesive labels are not recommended on discs( see Fred Byers: Care and
Handling of CDs and DVDs (NIST)"
- once a label is put on the disc you can't remove it anymore. Are the
CD/DVD-tags of today technically mature ?
What are your experiences especially with big collections and massive
check out volume ? Any advice appreciated!
with kind regards
