Hi!

I used to work for Bowker. They are the Official ISBN agency and a for
profit agency at that. ISBN stands for "International Standard BOOK
Number." As far I know there is no way to get around them.

Based in my experience in the book industry, ISBN are essential to have your
book sold. You will have difficulty selling your book without an ISBN.
Book jobbers (YBP, Blackwell's, and the like) build their databases around
the ISBN. In the Library world, ISBNs are essential for book ordering.

That said it is my experience that media items (Videos, etc) don't always
ISBN numbers. Generally, the have a UPC numbers. It is my understanding
that many libraries order these item based on UPC. I am not a media
librarian; therefore, my advice is purely from a vendor stand point.

Hope this is helpful.
