At the Salt Lake County Library System we purchase new release movies by
committee. There are now 6 of us and we bring titles and talk about
them and purchase most of what we bring. Our liveliest discussions are
over popular films that were not well reviewed; sometimes we end up
buying them, sometimes we don't. In a nutshell, here is our written
criteria:

=20

DVDs selected by this committee will meet at least one of the following
criteria:

=20

*Widely critically acclaimed

*Significant award winner and/or multiple award winner

*Best of the popular, mainstream DVD releases

*Best of non-mainstream DVD releases, for example:

Best of foreign films

Best of independent films

Best films that have not been widely distributed

*Best local interest films=20

*Quality book based films

*Films of enduring value or lasting interest

=20

During the past year, we have come to rely heavily on www.metacritic.com
in considering reviews. For popular, mainstream movies this means we
don't consider anything with a metascore of less than 40 (generally
unfavorable reviews) to be best of anything and won't buy them. We will
usually purchase movies in the 45-60 range (mixed reviews) if there is a
lot of demand for them. Above 60, if it's a Hollywood movie, we will
almost always buy it. This helps us to draw the line somewhere and
considers many review sources. It's useful having the committee because
quality and where and how to draw the line is a subject of constant
discussion. There are times we've held tighter standards and been
under so much pressure to buy more popular films that this is where we
are now.=20

Can anyone recommend/share criteria used in public libraries to purchase

new releases on DVD? We're trying to determine ways to distinguish fun,

entertainment-fare from the more critically acclaimed titles. Does
anyone

have a definition for this "lighter", yet very popular, material that
they

use for collection development purposes?

=20

Thanks.
