We started with the actual disc behind the Circulation Desk and the staff placing the disc in at checkout and removing it at check-in. The case with original art work was on open shelving and the disc was stored in small hanging files behind the desk. After about 6 months of purchasing DVDs we started to run out of shelving in the Circulation area. Therefore I started shelving the nonfiction DVDs with the disc inside. We did not lose any that I know of. After about 1 year of purchasing DVDs we ran out of space for any more discs. After some discussion, I decided to have all videos with 1 or 2 discs in their case and placed on open shelving. Anything with more than 3 discs has a dummy case on the shelve with the original case containing the discs behind the Circulation Desk. The staff does a switch at checkout. I moved the bookcase holding the DVD Collection right under one of our unplugged security cameras. I believe people think it is live and that may be why we have not l
ost too many in the 5 months we have had open DVD shelving.
I hope this information helps.
