Hi videolibbers
fyi - I have forwarded on authority records from the LC web-site
<http://authorities.loc.gov/>

The heading they refer "Anime" to is: "Animation (Cinematography)" - Japan (for works on the technical aspects of making anime).

The heading "Animated films -Japan", i understand to be for general works on anime itself.

Other useful headings are: Animated films--History and criticism, Animated television programs, or Animated videos.

Note: The LC entry for 'Anime' is a complex see reference for a subject heading. The 260 tag is a "complex see reference"

"260 - Complex See Reference--Subject (R)

The explanatory text and the headings referred to that are required in a reference record for subjects when relationships exist between an unestablished subject and established subjects that cannot be adequately conveyed by one or more simple cross references generated from 4XX See From Tracing fields in established heading records. A phrase such as search under: may be generated based on the field tag."

It appears the heading in question is not an authorized subject heading, but
rather a reference heading, referring the user to "headings for specific
types of animated media subdivided by Japan, e.g. $a Animated films--Japan."
The 008 field of the authority record, sh2003003075, is coded:
(09) Kind of record b = Untraced reference
(14) Heading use-main or added entry b = Not appropriate
(15) Heading use-subject added entry b = Not appropriate
(16) Heading use-series added entry b = Not appropriate

Another authority record, Animation (Cinematography)--Japan (sh 99004993)
includes 'Anime' as one of its references (along with Japanese animation and
Japanimation).

I believe we use Animated films--Japan.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you,

"I would like to see a subject heading of Anime, and will talk to our tech
services head about it."

At the risk of once again offending, I feel I should echo my colleague Mr.
Baldus' observation that under "Anime" in ClassWeb there is a note reading:
"USE Animation (Cinematography)--Japan." Of course one can do whatever one
feels is best in one's own catalog, but this factor may have implications
for libraries involved with shared cataloging databases.

In any case, Anime seems like more of a genre term, so I'd be tempted to use
it in a 655 field with a second indicator 4--unless it's listed in GSAFD or
some other identifiable list of genre terms. It seems as if Anime should be
a genre term or a subject heading since it's in such wide usage, but then in
Library of Congress Subject Heading land, "Rap (Music)" is used for Hip-hop
music instead of being a narrower term thereof.

Apparently we are using 'animated films - Japan - videorecordings." I would
like to see a subject heading of Anime, and will talk to our tech services
head about it.

Does anyone use a specific subject heading for anime other than just
"animated films." I would like to be able to pull up this category in a
search, but our catalogers say there isn't anything to use to differentiate.
