ALA Chicago is almost here! I am looking forward to seeing many of you

*VRT Gala: /Urban Poet/ at the the Gene Siskel Film Center
*Sunday, June 26, 2005 from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Tickets: $25 VRT member, $30 other. Tickets available at the VRT Booth
or at the door.

Filmmaker Antonio Franceschi will screen and discuss his film /Urban
Poet/. Set in Chicago, the film follows Rita, a young Puerto Rican poet
from Humboldt Park. At odds with the social ills in her community, she
puts her frustrations onto paper and establishes herself as a serious
contender in the Latino Café Poetry Slam Competition. The film received
high marks from film critic Roger Ebert during the 19th Annual Chicago
Latino Film Festival and April 11, 2003 was declared “Urban Poet Day” in

Learn how you can enhance your public programming with your film
collection. Organize a film series! Help patrons create videos for
storytelling. Enhance your community's media literacy through
documentary discussion sessions. Media librarians and specialists share
ideas for incorporating film into programming and library instruction,
while Bay Area Video Coalition, ALA Public Programs Office, and National
Video Resource introduce programming services their organizations offer.
