Set in Chicago, Urban Poet is a coming of age story following Rita, a =
young Puerto Rican poet from Humboldt Park struggling to find her voice. =
At odds with the social ills in her community, she puts her frustrations =
onto paper and establishes herself as a serious contender in the Latino =
Caf=E9 Poetry Slam Competition. The film received high marks from film =
critic Roger Ebert during the 19th Annual Chicago Latino Film Festival =
and April 11, 2003 was declared "Urban Poet Day" in Chicago.=20

Urban Poet marked Antonio Franceschi's feature film directorial debut. =
He began his career in various production capacities on independent =
films and television productions His extensive career in television led =
him to produce several broadcast shows. He is the founder of New Film =
Production, a Latino-owned independent television and motion picture =
company located in Chicago.=20

The Gene Siskel Film Center is located at 164 North State Street (State =
and Lake), across from the Chicago Theater and =BD block from Marshall =
Fields' flagship store. It is within walking distance of several of the =
ALA Conference hotels, the Palmer House Hilton being the closest, so you =
can use the ALA shuttle for arrival. It is just steps from the Red Line =
EL stop at Lake Street or at the Brown Line's State and Lake Street =
stop. Cabs are also an easy option. There is no street parking, but =
since this is the theater district, several parking garages are =
available within a few blocks, but be warned, they could cost you as =
