Well said, sir! And it could be applied to many other aspects of our
society.

Subject: RE: [Videolib] Great Courses on DVD
Look...I ain't a public librarian, so I can't really talk about life in
the trenches there...BUT: I will say even in academe, if you don't have
someone on board to: buy the unique and enlightening stuff, publicize
the obscure and wonderful, serve as viewers' advisory, act as advocate
for quality programming, make sure the bibliographic access is
effective, all that's ever gonna get checked out is Dumb and Dumber.
The public--academic and otherwise--often doesn't know what it doesn't
know. The Hollywood glitz gets the publicity--THAT they know. All the
other stuff often falls off the public radar. It's our job to build
collections that serve the broad base of need and potential need and to
make sure our users are aware of what's available and why it's cool and
important. =20

Perhaps you've been discussing this of late and I missed
it,
=09
=09
but here goes...
=09
=09
=09
=09
=20
Has anyone changed their NO ILL LENDING policy for
videos
=09
=09
and film to a lending policy?
=09
=09
And if so, why?
=09
=09
=09
=09
=20
We just went live with INN-Reach - an Innovative based
consortial
=09
=09
borrowing system for a potential of 800 libraries
including
=09
=09
public, academic, medical, and other special libraries.=20
=09
=09
Only one of the 35 libraries who are up and running so
far
=09
=09
has offered to lend.=20
=09
=09
=09
=09
=20
Increasing circulation figures for expensive educational
=09
=09
films with low circulation would seem like a plus.
=09
=09
Making expensive items available to libraries that can't
=09
=09
purchase them seems like another.
=09
=09
Borrowing Blockbuster features seems like a negative.
=09
=09
Lending older format items to libraries who still have
playing
=09
=09
equipment for laser disks, 16mm film, seems like
another.
=09
=09
=09
=09
