Facets Multimedia recently released Aventurera, a wild and wildly popular
Mexican film from the 50s

AVENTURERA
Directed by Alberto Gout, 1950
One of the most popular Mexican films ever made and a cult sensation
during its recent U.S. theatrical revival, Aventurera is the most famous
example of the curious hybrid of film noir and musical films known as
cabareteras that were wildly popular in Mexico in the 40's and 50's.
Starring the immortal Ninon Sevilla, who Variety called "a cross between
Rita Hayworth and Carmen Miranda," it follows the melodramatic rise and fall
of a popular nightclub star with a dark past. Newly remastered, in Spanish
with English subtitles.

We have released a number of other popular Mexican films and plan on
releasing more in the future. Please contact me directly for more
information.

Subject: [Videolib] Popular Spanish-language DVDs

Greetings all,

I’m a long-time lurker, first-time poster—love this listserv! My smallish
public library wants to add to our Spanish-language video collection with an
infusion of 20-25 Spanish-language DVD titles. We’ve had no difficulty
finding resources for critically-acclaimed titles, so we already have a
healthy representation of Bunuel, Almodovar, etc. We also have a pretty good
handle on titles that were widely released in the United States (Amores
Perros, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Like Water for Chocolate, etc.)

But what we really want now is to acquire some titles that might not have
been critically acclaimed, but were wildly popular in their country of
origin (and preferably, but not necessarily, Mexico). We’re talking the
Mexican equivalent of Titanic, Moulin Rouge or Die Hard (and, not to exclude
TV titles, The Sopranos & Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Can anyone suggest some
titles or point us toward a resource? Thanks very much

Michael Logan
