I sent the NY Times review from 1974 to the list. I hope it gets here. Several points:

*It is laughable to call the film pornographic in light of what we see on the Internet today.

* Canby says in his 1974 review: "What is making Lenny or more or less respectable today?"!!!! --(This is in 1974!!!).

*Although Canby gave it a mixed review, Bruce's theme is loud and clear: "Don't take away my words."
Well folks, this is exactly what the current Administration is all about

*Lenny Bruce has been noted for his distinctive voice in the history of Jewish-American comedy and humor.

*Dustn Hoffman is a national treasure and is one of our most highly respected actors.

*We have to vocalize and stand on our freedom to read/expression policies. We are in the same crisis that our parents were
in 50 years ago. I know it is easy for me to say, but you cannot let your patrons tell you what to do!!!!

Last, but not least, make that call to the ACLU now.

This email was very timely for me. I just recieved a formal request for
removal of "Lenny" the 1974 film starring Dustin Hoffman. This is my first
time to put a film through the reconsideration process. The patron was okay
with the standup routines but very disconcerted with the "pornographic"
betrayal of his life. I would really appreciate any comments on the film
to take to my committee.
