I'm not sure 100% about this, but I believe the disks have a small space
with no data that runs about 1/2 inch from the inside of the disk itself.
And I think this is true of both sides of the dvd. We put donut-type
labels on ALL our dvds. Have not had problems. However, they can be
removed!
