We found out the hard way. All our dvds were in security cases with a
checkpoint tag on them but we did a quick inventory after a couple of
years and found out that we had lost 85 dvds - about a third of our
collection at the time. They are now housed behind the circulation desk
and since then have only lost dvds when they are intransit from other
libraries - our patrons must now bring our dvds back to our library.

How do you handle theft of dvds? Has anyone done a study to see how much
of their inventory is missing? How much is too much? We are a public
library with over 2,000 dvds and "shrinkage" has become a major problem.
