Yes they are defunct and there is little or no chance you will be able to
license this. This is what happens when companies go bankrupt. I get the
impression this one is especially ugly with a number of different parties
arguing over who gets what. Under the circumstances you simply can't license
the film.
The GOOD news is that the Janus part of the Cowboy collection is safe and
sound back at Janus and if this stuff ( RASHOMON, 7TH SEAL , LA STRADA etc)
had gone into bankruptcy it would have been a terrible tragedy
