A music librarian came up with the answer to my question.

Live from Lincoln Center http://www.pbs.org/lflc/81-85.htm

Aired Sept. 12 1984 and was called "Bach to Bach" (all-Bach program
featuring alternating
performances on original and modern instruments).

Unfortunately the LFLC website also says: "LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER
programs
are not available for purchase. Our programs are cleared for broadcast
only, and our agreements with artists, guilds, and unions prohibit us
from making them available in any other form."

But in the process I learned of a valuable tool I hadn't used before, the
Music Library Association listserv, MLA-L@listserv.indiana.edu
After posting the question there I got six promising leads within an hour.

A professor here wants to use what she remembers as a video that aired on
PBS and featured conductor Christopher Hogwood comparing baroque music as
played on period instruments versus modern instruments. I've had no luck
searching for it so I suspect it may be contained in a video of a specific
performance. Does it ring a bell with any of you?
