I'm not certain what classifies as a horror film but the only two that have
ever made me jump out my seat are (drum roll please):
Aliens
Wait until dark

I would also like to suggest -

Carnival of Souls
Psycho - 1960
The Birds
Black Cat - 1934
Village of the Damned
Night of the Living Dead
Exorcist
Halloween - original

There are also the "classic" horror films with Lon Chaney and Bela
Lugosi that might not be the best but are fun.
