Since I have NOTHING to do with the release of MURDER ON A SUNDAY MORNING
which won the Oscar last year for best documentary , I feel safe posting
an unsolicited rave to encourage EVERY library to get a copy. The film
had basically no theatrical distribution as HBO which funded it put it
straight to cable and I find a staggeringly small number of my friends have
ever heard of it and I would never have known about it had I not gotten
free HBO the week after the Oscars when they premiered it.
This film is remarkable for its story, more than anything special or
unusual in the style which is staid. It is about a black teenager arrested
in Florida for the murder of a white tourist and the Public defenders who
take on his case. I have no idea how the director ( who is French) got
tipped off that this was going to be one hell of a story but it is one
the most intriguing films about race and the criminal justice system I have
ever seen. I believe it is a nice cheap video/dvd which you can get from
the wholesaler of your choice but NO LIBRARY SHOULD BE WITHOUT IT
