Here's a list of Video Round Table events and meetings at the ALA Annual
Conference, Toronto, June 19-25

---------

VRT BOOTH in the exhibits hall: #4741. We still need volunteers to staff
the booth. Please consider donating an hour or two of your time. An online
sign-up form is available at:
http://web.library.uiuc.edu/ugl/media/_vrt/signup.asp

SUNDAY, JUNE 22:

1:30-3:30 pm
VRT Program: CANADIAN CINEMA -- HOLLYWOOD OF THE NORTH
(co-sponsored by ACRL-ARTS)
Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel (SHER); Dominion Ballroom

In the shadow of American cultural dominance, Canada is home of a truly
marginalized cinema. Even in Canadian movie theaters, Canadian features are
treated as foreign films. When or even if they appear on the Canadian big
screen, it is usually at the art house cinema and typically for short runs.
In spite of this, the Canadian government supports the film industry and
grants funding for features and documentaries.

A panel of Canadian directors will join us to discuss their experience of
making films, both feature films and documentaries, in Canada, and their
thoughts on the notion of a national cinema. Scheduled to appear will be
directors Patricia Rozema (I'VE HEARD THE MERMAIDS SINGING, WHEN NIGHT IS
FALLING and MANSFIELD PARK); Deepa Mehta (BOLLYWOOD/HOLLYWOOD) and
documentarian Karen Shopsowitz (MY FATHER'S CAMERA).

6-10 pm
VRT GALA
National Film Board of Canada Mediatheque
150 John St., Toronto
(http://www.nfb.ca/mediatheque/en/)

Description provided by VRT Treasurer Nell Chenault:
This will be one of the best events at this year's ALA conference, thanks to
our host, The National Film Board of Canada
(http://www.nfb.ca/e/index_about.html). I am accepting mail registration
for Gala tickets through Thurs. June 12. We may also have tickets at the
ALA exhibits VRT booth 4741. The registration form is available from the VRT
website: www.ala.org/vrt.

Tickets for VRT members: $20, non-members $25 ($37 Canadian). This is a
great bargain for a great setting, entertaining speakers, meal, drink, and
schmoozing with video fanatics! Bring non-video librarians as a guest - we
are a friendly bunch and are looking for media converts!

This year's VRT Gala is at the National Film Board of Canada's "Mediatheque"
(convenient to the ALA bus route.) Our guests are award winning animators
Wendy
Tilby and Amada Forbis (ALA Adult Notable: /When the Day Breaks/), Marine
Chartrand (ALA YALSA Notable: /Black Soul/), Vincent Gauthier, and Alison
Loader. There will be a buffet, bar, and the usual media door prizes
(supplied by our generous vendor sponsors). Their animation will be
showcased on monitors and in the NFB theatre.

MONDAY, JUNE 23
