I am told that US rights on this belong to the Vitagraph company
which is a division of the American Cinematheque in LA so you should get in
touch with them. Don't have number but I am sure you can find them with
an internet search. This is example of the complications of figuring out
who DOES own a film in the US
I just about freaked out yesterday when I was told that our new film
from Korea CHIHWASEON was having a PUBLIC screening at Portland State
University NEXT WEEK. I had JUST booked the film in for a run ON FILM
at a Venue in May. I called up a rather uniformed professor and got
the film cancelled ASAP. I still wonder a little how the prof was going
to get the video projection equipment to do the screening. I would
hope that the tech people would at least ASK what it was for
In this case I nipped in the bud but it could have been very, very ugly
You have to be very, very , very careful if you want to screen a movie
publicly ESPECIALLY a new foreign language film. Make sure that you
track down the LEGITIMATE owner of US rights which would almost never
be an overseas VIDEO company. If US rights have not been sold , you will
have to go to the ORIGINAL producer to determine if they or someone else
owns the film.
