Dear Colleagues,

This message is primarily aimed at Canadian libraries and universities.
Two weeks ago, I was approached, as well as at least one other
Canadian university, to accept a donation of digiBeta masters and VHS
tapes of the Tyler Texas Black Film Collection, a collection of 49 titles
chronicling race films from roughly the first 1/2 of the 20th century. The
original film collection resides at Southern Methodist University. The
donor company in question wants a tax receipt to cover the costs of making the
video masters of the 49 films. Their "business plan" does not permit
them to distribute the material for two years. Please be aware, if you are
approached, that this video collection might not have been cleared for
reproduction and contact Tinsley Silcox, Director of the G. William
Jones Film and Video Collection, Hamon Arts Library, Southern Methodist
University tsilcox@mail.smu.edu

Another case of having to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Oksana
