Dear Peter,
Thank you for your reply. I think using boxes with the CD type of ring
is a good solution. However, the cost may be quite high and they are not
environmental friendly. How much does a box cost in your country? How do
you handle the original boxes?

I'm also looking into using some ring labels that can protect the centre
part of the discs. I'm not sure how useful they are, but they may add
more strength to the fragile part, and they won't cost too much (It's
only US$0.1 for a piece). Has anyone used any kind of labels?

In addition, has anyone used any machine for cleaning and restoring
CD/DVDs? I've found from the Demco catalogue that there's a machine
called "The Edge Disc Cleaning & Repair System", and another one called
"Skip Doctor". I'd like to hear your comment and advice on these
machines. The web site for Demco is: www.demco.com

Subject: Re: CD/DVD cleaning and repair system

Dear Teresa,

we face the same problems. There are so many different types of buttons
in these DVD boxes that the public seems to be disturbed how to handle
them. And some have such severe design flaws that it is nearly
impossible not to damage the disc when releasing it. Our solution is to
exchange ALL DVD boxes. We use transparent boxes that have a starlike
button similar to those in CD boxes (jewel case) which conserves the
disc best as I see. There are some advantages to do it in this way:
- The sensitive center part of the disc is not stressed.
- People can learn more easily how to release a disc when there is only
one type of box.
- Because all our boxes are transparent we can stick the supplementary
sheet to the backside of the cover to avoid loss.
- There are no more cardboard boxes in circulation because all of them
(Warner/Ivy Snapper box) are trimmed to fit in our new plastic boxes.

Here is a picture of this type of box

Perhaps you can find something similar in Hong Kong.

I wonder if there are any rings available that might reinforce the
center part of the disc? Who knows anything about it?

With kind regards
