Sandy Berman and myself sent documentation to LC to prove that
"mountaintop removal" was an important new subject heading. The first
chief documents on the subject were videotapes - one by WV filmmaker
Robert Gates - ALL SHAKEN UP, and THE FIGHT TO SAVE KAYFORD MOUNTAIN.
Here is the letter from LC...I recommend that all media librarians
likewise use new films to support additions to LC subject headings.
Apparently is has worked, very quickly. Thanks to Mr. Yee. - Steve

Dear Steve Fesenmaier:
In response to documentation received from Sandy Berman and you, a
Cataloging Policy and Support Office subject cataloging policy
specialist has proposed the subject heading MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL MINING
on August 6, 2002. Subject to review by a subject heading editorial
process, I fully expect that this subject heading will become an
approved LCSH subject term in a couple of weeks.
Many thanks for writing us!
