We have been noticing the same thing with recently ordered items. When we =
send them back for replacement the new tapes have been coming in with bad =
sound also.

I have been noticing this too and am very glad it's not just me! We=20
recently had a problem that was only observed on some HiFi decks=20
(constant buzz or "static" sound throughout that could not be=20
detected on other decks), but there have been other problems as well.=20
These have included sound levels both too low and too high and=20
inconsistent sound (lots of "ups and downs" in sound levels on the=20
same tape).

Have your symptoms been similar or are you finding completely=20
different problems?
