We have been splicing videotapes (at the beginning and the end of the tape)
at our library since before I began working here over 13 years ago. It works
just fine--we use a splicing block, splicing tape and a sharp pair of
scissors. Good eyesight for close work is a plus. We cut our splice edges
together so they match and cut at an angle.
I have also heard that it is not a good idea to splice into the tape. We
never have, unless it's a personal tape belonging to one of us.
We've also put a tape on a new reel, put the tape and reels in a new shell,
and replaced other sundry parts. We have spare parts from discarded videos
saved, because not all videos are made the same.
Hope this helps,
