If your library has access to Lexis-Nexis, your faculty person can go
into the "World News" section and limit her search to "Asia/Pacific
News Sources" and change the date to "All available dates". L/N goes
back pretty far. Also, if you have access to ProQuest, she should try
that, since it reaches back to 1985.

She can use Google's advanced search and limit by country code
in the domain field (.cn for China, .tw for Taiwan, .hk for Hong
Kong). Here is a list of country codes
If she uses HotBot's advanced search, she
can limit by region. But, I'm not sure if she'd get any hits old

And for those who never want to get any work done again... there's
Search Engine Colossus, which
has links to search engines from around the world. It also identifies
the language used in each search engine. Your faculty person could
use a search engine from China or Hong Kong. Once again, I don't know
if she'd get any hits from 1986.

Good luck!
