Synopsis Although Jomo Kenyatta is one of the few African leaders whose
position survived both the nationalist and neo-colonial eras, his life is
still very much a mystery to most people. Embodied in Kenyatta's life, more
so than in any other African leader, is the history of his country's
struggle for independence. At one time he was sent into exile from his
homeland and branded by the English as the leader of darkness and death, but
by the time Kenya gained its independence he was seen as the best hope for
stability and continuity of past with present.
