Our medium-sized public library system (serves 100,000+) is starting
plans for new main=20
building. Currently, our building is 40,000+ sq.ft. and we are shooting
for a 100,000 sq.ft.
building to be built. Currently, the Audiovisual Department is on a
separate floor (4th out of 5) and
has always been in its' 'own' place with checkout taking place in our
department. Our staff is
trained to handle AV materials and questions (patrons skip the Reference=

Department if they
have a music/AV question and come straight to us.) We are able to play
music in our area
which the patrons really enjoy (they know when "Kevin" is working - our
Rock Band star).=20
The future plans for the new building include audiovisual materials in a=

"Popular Library" collection on the first floor
and next to the popular fiction books. Because this is a 'trend' for the=

future - "Patrons want one-stop shopping." This is not what my staff and=

I think. Our department is known for its' customer service and patrons
like the individualized attention.
We won't have an enclosed secured area, separate Reader's Advisory Desk,=

or be able to
play our music :( . I have to have some "ammunition" to back-up my
doubts about this new 'vision'/trend.=20
So I would appreciate both pros and cons, plus your thoughts/opinions.

Here's my questions:=20
1) Does your library have a separate 'Audiovisual Department' or 'room'?=

a. If so, do you have circulation control or is the material carried
elsewhere in the building to be checked-out at
a main desk?
b. Do you have 'control' over the materials being returned and
checked in? Missing parts, damage inspection, etc.
=20
2) If not, do you have the non-print materials 'inter-filed' with the
print? (This has also been discussed).

3) Have you noticed any user preferences between separated departments
(formats) or do they prefer the=20
Popular Library design?

Any input would be appreciated! - You may e-mail reply to me, rather
than the ListServ - THANKS!
