I can't find my darn copy of the copyright law but I am sure someone will
post it. In any event it refers specifically to a "FACE TO FACE" teaching
exemption which is why distributors have "interpreted" this as being part of
regular classroom instruction. Anyone could "introduce" a film on a campus
or library but that does not make it part of a face to face teaching
instruction. Taken to its' extreme , you could get someone to "discuss" the
history of animation in front of an all campus screening of FANTASIA but
Disney would still sue you and win. I believe most media people know and
understand the difference between a real face to face exemption and
professors and student groups trying to justify public showing. The most
common mistake I run into at Universities and a variety of institutions (
Churches, JCCs etc) is that charging admission has ANYTHING to do with if
you can show something publicly. It does not and never has.
