RE: rental collections

We have charged for our videos ever since we started our collection in 1984.
At first, we charged $2 per title for a 3 day checkout. We have gone to
only $1 per title for 2 week checkout. Last year, several of us
brainstormed and came up with a whole page of reasons why the fee should be
eliminated - discriminatory against lower income patrons, inconsistant with
other library policy - we don't charge for checking out books, and we have
not charged for any other new format - computer software, compact discs,
CD-ROMs, we shouldn't be charging people for information, etc. However, we
take in over $20,000 a year (I know, that is much less that some
libraries!), and our Board doesn't want to give that up. In fact, when I
broached the idea to the Board President, his feeling was that people are
used to paying for videos.
I hate charging people who need videos to supplement school projects, or
parents who are checking out children's titles that are not even 10 minutes
long. This next year, I am going to try at least to see if we can eliminate
charges on nonfiction and children's titles.

Oh, by the way, we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel on our
massive video conversion project - matching sleeves up with the video cases,
slicing, dicing the sleeves to fit on the cases, stickering, laminating and
shelving. If I never hear the words "video project" again, it will be too
