It is time again to send us your nominations for the VRT Notable Videos
for Adults list. Have you seen a video program recently that you couldn't
stop talking about? It might be a good nomination for Notable Videos for
Adults! This year's list will cover programs released on video for the
first time during the years 2000-2002. We are accepting nominations
until October 31, 2001. The 2002 list will be selected by the Notable
Videos for Adults Committee at Midwinter ALA meeting in New Orleans, on
Monday, January 21.

Please refer to the selection criteria and the nomination procedures
described on the VRT web site:
http://www.ala.org/vrt/criteria.html#criteria. For additional information
about the selection process, please see a recent article by
committee-member Rue Herbert in MC Journal: The Journal of Academic Media
Librarianship (Summer 2001), "A Notable Experience"

This is our fourth year selecting a list of the best videos for adults
from recent releases. We have learned quite a bit about how to make the
process as productive as possible, resulting in a list that truly
represents the creme de la creme of videos for adults suitable for library
collections of all types. The process becomes extremely unwieldy if you
nominate without careful thought and without gathering the information we
need to complete the viewing process. So please follow the guidelines and
directions outlined below:

If you are unfamiliar with the previous lists, take a look on the VRT web
site; all three lists are there, with 25-word descriptions:
http://www.ala.org/vrt/. This is the best way for you to learn the type of
nominations we are seeking.

Only nominate titles that you believe are truly outstanding, as defined by
our selection criteria. There's a big difference between a pretty good
title that you would buy for your library's collection and a truly notable
video. Think about how you would differentiate between the two categories
- and don't nominate the merely good or very good. Send us the truly
outstanding!

Send complete contact information for your nominations to the
chair of the committee, Marc Sober via email (msober@mail.pratt.lib.md.us)
or snail mail:

Audio-Visual Department
Enoch Pratt Free Library
400 Cathedral Street
Baltimore, MD 21201

You may also submit this information online:
http://www.ala.org/vrt/notable.html. By complete information we mean:
title; date of video release; distributor information (or home video)
including the following, address, phone number, fax number, web address;
any awards the film has won; and citations for any reviews you have read.

Some of you expressed interest in serving on this committee, but we had no
vacancies this year. We will, however, have several vacancies next year,
as we have members who will have served the maximum of four consecutive
years by the end of Midwinter 2002. So please contact Marc Sober between
now and then regarding your interest in serving. We will need a mix of
public, academic, and school librarians for the committee. For more
information about serving on the committee, please see the Notables
section of the VRT web site:
http://www.ala.org/vrt/criteria.html#composition. If you still have
questions, please contact Marc Sober or me (brancoli@indiana.edu).

We look forward to receiving your nominations!
