At American University, if a professor doesn't specify a format and the
title is on DVD I automatically buy it on DVD. If a professor requests VHS
and it's available on DVD I suggest DVD instead and they usually agree.
Some have requested VHS only because they didn't realize the library
collects DVDs or that we have plenty of DVD players or that campus AV
delivers DVD players to all classrooms that do not have one installed. One
exception is for films that require two class periods - some professors
would rather just stop it and pick it up exactly where it left off - one of
the few advantages of VHS over DVD. If a prof indicates he or she wants it
on VHS just so he or she can preview it at home, I would try to dissuade
him or her by recommending that they rent it from a video store and bring
me the receipt for reimbursement. This is probably not an option for
everyone. Even though I champion the advantages of DVD over VHS, I usually
buy the format the professor prefers before things get ugly.

Concerning the policy question, our *informal* policy is to go with VHS
unless the professor specifically asks for DVD. The main reasons are those
that you already mentioned. Also, since so many documentaries are not yet
available on DVD, the collection will remain VHS driven anyhow. Frankly,
most of our professors are ambivalent about format, as long as we get the
title in the collection, so it simplifies matters to stick with VHS until
the tide turns with documentaries. Not very progressive, perhaps, but I
find it to be the most efficient use of resources. (Even so, our DVD
collection IS growing steadily).

3. Lastly, a policy question...We are considering changing our collection
policy such that when a choice between DVD and VHS is available, we will
opt for DVD, including faculty requests. Of course there will be those
who might complain since they prefer VHS because that is in their comfort
zone. The complaint I anticipate will be that most faculty who would want
to preview films at home may only have access to a VCR. Has anyone
tackled this issue?

All replies are welcome!

Many thanks and apologies for the multiple questions!
