Media format for dissertations

I had an interesting meeting about PHD & MFA dissertations which include
media. Special Collections ( who houses the dissertations) have always
specified vhs as the format of choice. I always assumed that we
used U-matic for the "archival - using the term loosely" copy & vhs for
the access copy. Since we are still in the early stages of all things
digital , U-matic is slowly fading away, vhs is still going strong, but
has its limitations, what are other academic libraries recommending as the
"archival" media format for dissertations.
