How are your materials arranged currently? It sounds similar to our current
situation here. We are in the process of retrospectively changing our video
collection as well. Prior to the end of 1999, a/v materials were given
accession numbers and then arranged by genre (which isn't exactly "user
friendly" for obvious reasons - especially for non-fiction titles).

>From the year 2000 on, materials are no longer given accession numbers and
instead are given either Dewey numbers (non-fiction) or classified in a variety
of genres a system-wide committee selected (drama, comedy, horror, sci-fi,
etc.). The classification system (using Cutter-Sanborn Tables) then
alphabetizes the materials within the genre categories.

I'm not sure if any of this is exactly the type of information you were looking
for or not. However, if you are interested in knowing more about the specifics
of our re-organization (and how we are currently still handling the
retrospective process) I would be happy to share more details.
