Excuse the capitalization but...I MUST RESPOND TO THIS IN A VERY LOUD WAY! (Incidentally, I am not usually loud). I am the Electronic Services and Media Librarian at Manhattanville College Library and I STRONGLY urge that these two NOT be put together! O.K. so I have to vent...it MAY be possible considering what responsibilities and what staff in each department the librarian will have. As electronic services librarian, I am responsible for the library's website and databases as well as the usual collection development and reference desk coverage and all the librarians teach a required information literacy one-credit course. Although, because of my growing responsibilites with Media Services, I have not taught the course in a year. Now, as Media Services Librarian, I am responsible for CAMPUS-WIDE media services which includes the scheduling, delivery, maintenance, purchasing off all equipment and we have begun the installations of media equipped classrooms with our first one o
pening last fall and now of course, there are demands for more! All of this with no media Coordinator, a position that I have been fighting for since I began the job 2 1/2 years ago. All I have working under me are about 5-6 students and when there are no students because they are all in class, guess who has to push TVs and VCRs around to classrooms. I have told the Library Director that I do not care what you do with Media Services - I do not want to do it any longer. I want to go back to being just an Electronic Services Librarian. Just to finalize my venting here, I would have found this position challening if we hired a Media Services Coordinator who could manage the technical and day-to-day operations, but without that position under me, my position is left to be...a joke! Just a slice of life that I hope will make you think.
