RE: "Best" lists

Ellen, this is one of the criteria we use. One person I watch for is the
Chicago Tribune columnist Michael Wilmington. In 1999, Wilmington had
several articles on the best 100 movies of the century, the best year for
movies, etc. I don't know any of the NYT critics, but they probably put out
best lists for various types of movies during the year. Also, Facets
publishes a great catalog for movie lovers with all kinds of lists. Several
of the popular magazines often do the best list of the year. Going back a
few years for Time, Newsweek, etc., can provide lists of titles. I know
other people will have other good ideas, too.
