Our library has had DVDs for nearly two years now, and the only real problems we've encountered are: 1) the machines need to be cleaned periodically when the DVD's start skipping, and 2) if folks aren't careful with the DVDs then they can get scuffed, and if it's bad enough, they need to be buffed so they play properly. But generally speaking, our DVDs aren't any more high maintenance than the VHS collection.
For what it's worth,

I am in need of any practical information that any of you have on the
repair and maintenance issues you're having with DVDs. Is there
anything radically different from the usual CD problems? We don't have
any DVDs in our collection and I'm getting questions on them from my
client libraries .

Thanks in advance for your help.
