At American University Library (a medium-sized academic library - 800,000
volumes), we have a steadily growing collection of DVDs - mostly feature
films for literature and film studies classes primarily. We have four DVD
players in the library and just under 100 titles (about half of which we
have a VHS version of). It's a medium that has been getting steady use both
in the library and in the classroom (AU AV services has players installed
in several classrooms). I don't expect it to replace VHS in the near future
though it does have a superior picture and superior navigability. I suspect
DVD will go the way of the albatross someday but so will everything else,
so why not jump in.
