Are you thinking of the 1956 film "Friendly Persuasion" directed by
William Wyler and starring Gary Cooper. The film was based on a novel
by Jessamyn West about a Quaker family. Jessamyn West also wrote a book
"Except for me and thee: a companion to The friendly persuasion."
