Michael,

>What sort of device will convert a VHS video to digital format?

Depends, in part, on where the digital signal is going. Many newer
computers can have boards that convert analog video signals (VHS and
others) to a digital signal that are available for both Macs and PCs.
Computers that have "firewire" capabilities can use an external
converter/interface. Sony makes the DVMC-DA1 (or DA2) that is on Sony's
website as a handycam accessory. List price is under $500 (US). Blue
Flame Pro Media Convertor ($1500) is a rack-mounted professional converter.
There are also decks that have standard video and audio inputs and outputs
that record on digital tape which would also do the conversion as the tapes
are being recorded.

Hope this helps.
