This cutting and editing business has been going on since the days of
silent film.
Usually a battle between director and producer.
Often the producer had the last word....and the released
version was great.. For example, John Ford's Stagecoach and My Darling
Clementine were
altered by the producers. In some cases merely cut, in another
(Clementine)
Ford was forced to go back and change the ending...

Read Capra's autobiography for vivid accounts of these battles...he was
able to hold out
and get his way much of the time.
