Sorry, meant to include this. In addition to the AMIA site, here's a snippet of a canned reply we typically send off about film preservation/storage, handling, etc.
The American Movie Classics page <www.amctv.com> has very basic info, but has links to prez-related sites. Another good source is The Film Foundation <www/cinema.ucla.edu/filmfoundation> -- their offices are in NYC but UCLA hosts the site. Another is The National Film Preservation Foundation <www.filmpreservation.org> in San Francisco. The National Film Registry and related preservation activities can be found at <www.loc.gov/filmnfr/html>. Internationally, there is FIAF (the International Federation of Film Archives) <www.cinema.ucla.edu/fiaf>. *General* information on the Library of Congress Motion Picture division is at <www.lcweb.loc.gov/rr/mopic>. Finally, LC hosts a list of moving image archives with preservation info to varying degrees at <www.lcweb.loc.gov/film/arch.html> providing links to those various archives.
One good starting website, especially for a novice would be The Silents Majority site <www.mdle.com/ClassicFilms> which includes preservation information and links to similar sites.
