When I was selecting DVD's I kept in mind that it was for a core collection
which would necessarily include certain titles that any film collection
should have ie. Casablanca, Academy Award winners, certain children's titles,
etc. Also certain popular titles that would appeal to a broad range of
interests because you want them to actually get checked out! I also tried to
check reviews, not just of the film, but of the picture and sound quality of
the DVD, as well as the extra features provided. And then of course, one of
the main reasons for libraries to be purchasing DVDs, is that we can finally
buy current titles at a reasonable price! Unfortunately, we're going to have
to deal with duplicate titles, probably longer than we would like. We were
lucky enough to have grant money to purchase our initial collection - not
sure yet how we're going to keep it up! Right now, I'm just trying to find
time to get the first ones out on the shelves. Change is good. Change is
good.
