Just from my point of view as a collector (and distributor) I would be
reading the reviews in Randy's fine mag as well as others (such as Video
Business and Video Store which are free subscriptions and I think rarely
discussed in this listserv though they're both excellent resources) to see
what DVDs are worth owning. For example, Criterion's DVDs have far more
extras (second soundtracks, documentaries, original trailers, etc.) than the
average VHS video so if you only have The Passion of Joan of Arc or The Red
Shoes on video, it is well worth getting the DVD as well. The Matrix,
however, isn't really worth duplicating except for the better picture quality.
As we add extras to our DVDs being released by Image, we are adding most of
these to our home videos (except for second soundtracks) but I don't think
many studios are doing this.
