One place to start, for basic ideas, is the Ramsey/Sleeper "Architectural
Graphic Standards." This lists (with drawings) the standard dimensions of
equipment, tables, carrels, etc.
Library journals may also provide clues/hints, or perhaps the American
Archivist. AIC (American Institute of Conservation) also has preservation
guidelines, which can be a factor in designing spaces.
