About 4 years ago, as a birthday celebration for a friend, a group of us
canoed on the Uwharrie River.
We came to our destination, a pebble-beach island, and prepared
a meal. At some point I said, " Let's sing "Happy Birthday." And we did.
Some time later my friend's wife angrily denounced me for "Bogarting"
the occasion.
I understood her to mean that it was not my job to lead the song, or
perhaps to select the
timing for it.
In retrospect, she may have merely meant that I sang too loud!
That is the one and only time I have heard the term, and that is why
the incident stuck
with me.
