1. Announcements:

R. Girill said that the CEB Library has an open recruitment for a library assistant. The position will involve shared responsibilities within the CEB that may include editorial support.

T. Huwe announced that the IRLE Library has acquired a new Web collection, which is titled the Living New Deal Project. Faculty sponsor: Richard A. Walker, and Gray Brechin, Visiting Scholar. The site will be a repository of historical artifacts pertaining to the New Deal’s impact on California. The Web site will be interactive, allowing volunteers around the state to contribute images and digital files (with guidelines for formatting and resolution, etc). The URL is http://livingnewdeal.berkeley.edu.

W. Lowell said that she is in the process of hiring a librarian for the Visual Resources Center (formerly the Architecture Visual Resources Library). She has been acting director and her role in the future is still to be determined.

L. Vida said that WRCA has secured NEH support for a consortial project titled “The Origins of Western Water Policy.” WRCA’s partners in this grant proposal are Colorado State University, the University of Utah, Brigham Young University and the University of Washington.

R. Evans led a discussion of recent developments with respect to the upcoming contractual negotiations between the University and UC-AFT University Council Local 17.

2. Approval of Minutes:

The minutes for the March 5, 2007 TALAG meeting were approved as presented.

3. Selection of Incoming Chair of TALAG:

There was a single nomination for Chair (T. Huwe), which carries a two year term. The nominee was elected by verbal acclamation.

4. Discussion of Letter to Ben Crow, Academic Senate Committee on Library and Scholarly Communications (UCOLASC):

W. Lowell has agreed to draft a letter to Ben Crow on behalf of TALAG. Discussion ensued on how to organize the letter. TALAG decided to send Professor Crow a brief (electronic) cover letter, with links to attachments as appropriate.

Action: W. Lowell agreed to finalize and circulate the draft as soon as possible, as UCOLASC is meeting on December 17, 2007.

Action: TALAG members will send W. Lowell examples to include in one of the attachments. W. Lowell will incorporate any last minute final revisions, and then forward the draft to TALAG Chair N. Robinson. She will also send a copy of the message to L. Vida, so that she may send the letter if N. Robinson has not recovered from a cold in time to send the letter prior to December 17.

5. Fundraising Activity among the Affiliated Libraries:

L. Vida invited TALAG members to share examples of fundraising activity at each library. T. Huwe asked if this would include both charitable fundraising and grant-making (both for operations and/or research). It was agreed that it would be useful to include both types of fundraising. A round-robin report ensued.

WRCA: WRCA has been awarded several grants both from LAUC and other sources; runs an “affiliates” program; offers a lecture series; sends an annual mailing to affiliated and interested persons; publishes an annual calendar with ITSL, and raises funds through its Interlibrary Loan program.

Environmental Design Archives (EDA): EDA has received major funding from the NEH and the Getty Foundation, as well as the Graham Foundation, LAUC and LEF Foundation; runs a “friends” program; had an advisory body; and holds major fund raising events, also derives some income from its book series.

Law: Law coordinates with the development office at Boalt Hall as needed, often supplying guest speakers (archivists, or Director K. Vanden Heuvel) as requested.

ITS Library (ITSL): ITSL has a corporate affiliates program; has received ongoing grant support from a variety of sources; works with ITS with its own “affiliates” program; has received gifts from affiliated alumni; was the focus of the ITS quarterly publication that showcases activities at ITS.

The Ethnic Studies Library (ESL):  ESL coordinates with Letters and Science; its recent 10 year anniversary celebration "jumpstarted" development procedures with the Development Office of Letters and Science, which benefits both the library and its home institution, the Ethnic Studies Department; an annual summer barbecue is planned as well as continued author readings, but now with a fundraising component to be incorporated for all events; its website now has a "Give to Cal" link that allows for credit card donations to the ESL via University Relations.

IRLE Library (IRLEL): IRLEL launched a “friends” program on behalf of the entire IRLE, including database development of alumni using University Relations records; has successfully solicited foundations and unions for funds; has been awarded grants by LAUC, IRLE and by the UC Labor and Employment Research Fund (LERF); produces print and email newsletters for affiliates and outreach; has flyers to hand out; is listed on the “Give to Cal” site.

6. Next Scheduled Meeting:

TALAG’s next meeting will be held on March 5, 2008.
