The Affiliated Libraries Administrative Group (TALAG) Meeting, June 13, 2007

Present: Nick Robinson (Chair), Lily Castillo-Speed (recorder), Marci Hoffman, Linda Vida, Susan Garbarino, Rita Evans, Ruth Girill, Terry Huwe, Chuck James

I. Announcements:

• Ethnic Studies Library is celebrating its 10th year anniversary with a barbecue on July 12 and a fundraiser on November 9.

• IGS has implemented new scanning software on its Canon copiers. IGS Librarians are working with the Teaching Library to present bibliographic instruction to incoming journalism students. Jack Citrin is the new director of the IGS.

• Ruth ends her term on the Administrative Services Council soon. Nick will send out a list of open positions, such as this one, and ask for volunteers. She reports that Mike Rancer is looking into making retirement parties equitable. Thirty percent of Library staff is retiring soon and most will not be replaced.

• Linda gave an update on the space situation at the WRCA. Faculty support, especially from Elaine Tennant, has been very helpful. A non-WRCA cubicle will be installed in WRCA, but perhaps a second one will not need to be installed. If space for the other party is found elsewhere, then that party will leave the WRCA entirely. An interesting development is that it appears that there is a difference of opinion as to whether the Academic Senate Library Committee has purview over the Affiliated Libraries. It may be helpful to invite Ben Crow, the chair of the systemwide library committee, to one of our meetings to help clarify this. A letter to Dr. Crow may be helpful as well.

• Terry reported on the renovation of the Library of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. Space works well. He has P.I. status for a mass digitization project, coordinated with Lynn Grigsby. Such services are available to other Affiliated Libraries from the Digital Publishing Group.

• Rita has been elected the Chair of the Transportation Division of SLA.

II. Minutes of March 7, 2007: these minutes will be sent by email again for approval.

III. Berkeley Initiative for Leadership on Diversity (BILD) proposal

Lily described the status of the proposal and that it will be jointly submitted by LHRD, LAUC and TALAG. Its main components are staff mentoring and the steps leading up to the establishment of a Library Diversity Fellowship. The group supported the proposal.

IV. ILS Planning

The Library is beginning to plan for a new ILS to serve as a backend for the UC Local WorldCat. Nick met with Bernie Hurley to discuss the ALs’ involvement. Committees will be formed to work out details of the ILS and Affiliated Librarians can be involved at this level, with one AL person on each committee. Participation is critical. The timeline for implementation is perhaps two years. There will be no cost for AL participation.

V. CDL: Follow-up with Robin Chandler; Meeting with Ivy Anderson

A meeting with Ivy Anderson, including Terry, Marci, and Nick, is scheduled for July 11 to talk about the ALs and the OCLC digital archive and collection interests. Another question: how to accept the Google- scanned documents into CDL. Rita asserted that there should be more emphasis on older text and on the specialized content of the ALs.

VI. LAUC Statewide Spring Assembly

Susan, as LAUC-B delegate, submitted the following report:

Changes in the LAUC bylaws were approved, simplifying them and creating a new standing rules document. There were no significant substantive changes. The bylaws will now be submitted to the membership for a vote. A LAUC statewide ballot will be coming out on these changes this summer. Two positions at UCOP that relate to academic personnel are both vacant; until they are filled it is difficult to discuss librarian issues with UCOP. As a result, discussion of library issues has shifted to the ULs, SOPAG and SLASIAC. A systemwide Information Technology Guidance Committee has been formed to create a model for systemwide collaboration on IT issues. See: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/itgc

The first program was on mentoring at other UC libraries. The second was on scholarly communication and featured Ben Crow as one of the speakers. See: http://universityofcalifornia.edu/senate/committees/ucol

The next meeting is September 5, 2007.
