The Affiliated Libraries Administrative Group (TALAG) Meeting, March 7, 2007

Present: Nick Robinson (Chair), Lily Castillo-Speed, Marci Hoffman, Linda Vida, Susan Gabarino, Rita Evans, and Ruth Girill.

I. Announcements:

• Nick announced that Trina (from the Library Assistant Classification Committee) would like to do a presentation to TALAG on the procedures for reclassification. The group agreed that that she could do the presentation at our next quarterly meeting in June.

• Rita announced a one-year pilot from NTIS and GPO that will allow depository libraries to access NTIS "PB" reports online via a password-protected website. Full-text reports will be available for 2000 to the present and additional back files will be added. Jesse will post the password on the Library's password page (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Staff/CDP/index.html). Librarians must login users. The one password can accommodate 30 simultaneous users. There is a limit of 10 downloads per session; users are locked out after that. PB reports represent about 1/3 of NTIS titles.

• Susan announced that the Giannini Foundation library will be short staffed, please call before sending folks over.

• Linda reported that the Collections Council meeting discussed the white paper on open access and scholarly communication. See http://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/openaccesspolicy/.

• Transportation studies will be closed during spring break due to staffing shortages.

II. Minutes of December 6, 2006 meeting were approved.

III. Meeting with Laine Farley, February 20, 2007.

There was a discussion about the meeting with Laine Farley from CDL. The fact that there is no affiliated representative on SOPAG will be explored. There was some discussion of a new committee called the Mass Digitization Collection Advisory Committee. According to CDL, this committee will explore “the need to formalize the content selection process as we continue to move forward on both the OCA and Google mass digitization projects, CDL obtained approval from the ULs for the formation of a Mass Digitization Collection Advisory Committee (MDCAC).” It would be worth exploring the possibility of an affiliated representative. Rita will investigate this further.

IV. Affiliated Technical Services Committee.

This group has had two meetings so far. This group is a forum for technical services staff to discuss practices, training, and commonalities and differences. They are considering a formal charge and affiliation with TALAG. TALAG decided that they should have a couple more meetings to see how things develop and they should come back to TALAG in the fall.

V. NRLF Delivery to Affiliated Libraries.

Nick distributed a chart with the various delivery methods and there was a discussion of the variety. Rita will look into who is the UCB representative for NRLF.

VI. Telnet access to MELVYL has been discontinued, per email from Chuck Eckman.

VII. Collections Webpage.

Linda reported on the collection development webpage contains information on trial databases, passwords, etc. (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Staff/CDP/index.html).
Descriptions of the library collection webpage should include information on the affiliated libraries, see http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/AboutLibrary/description.html. Linda will check into this issue and find out more.

The next meeting is June 6, 2007.
