The Affiliated Libraries Administrative Group (TALAG) Meeting of November 9, 2005

10:30am to noon, 1000 Wurster Hall

Present: Lily Castillo-Speed, Rita Evans, Susan Garbarino, Ruth Girill, Ron Heckart, Dan Krummes, Waverly Lowell, Nick Robinson, Maryly Snow, Linda Vida (chair)

Revised minutes from the last TALAG meeting (10/5/2005) were approved.

Agenda for 11/14/05 meeting:

TALAG discussed the agenda for the upcoming meeting with University Librarian, Tom Leonard and Associate University Librarian Isabel Stirling and Bernie Hurley, Director or Library Technologies.

The meeting will be in 220 Evans, on Monday November 14th from 10-11am. The draft agenda was discussed.

CDL Resource Liaisons & Task Forces

TALAG reviewed the memo by Terry Huwe summarizing the current situation and possible actions regarding the CDL Resource Liaisons & Task Forces. We agreed to mention these at the meeting as an example of committees that TALAG members would be happy to serve on.

Waverly suggested sending a list of our names and areas of subject expertise to Isabel as she is usually the person who appoints people to these positions. The question of who would pay for any travel remains, although it is usually understood that the librarians unit would pay for travel. Discussion of whether the TALAG chair should act as an organizational liaison to CDL as Terry suggested in his memo was generally thought to be a good idea.

It was suggested that TALAG host an event where representatives from other UC Affiliated Libraries (such as UCLA, UC Davis) attend. Dan said he would put together a list of Affiliated Libraries at other UC campuses.

Linda mentioned that she would ask the Academic Senate Library Committee again to add TALAG to an agenda of one of their meetings.

Draft Letter of MOU with Library Preservation Dept

A copy of a draft MOU between affiliated units and the Preservation Dept (originally sent from the PRES Dept and edited by W. Lowell and L. Vida) was distributed. Linda said accept additional editorial suggestions and once it is done, we can each send the MOU to whomever we report to. Waverly will reformat the list of disaster supplies that Barclay sent and send it out to TALAG members. Once the MOU’s are signed and sent to Tom, Linda will ask Barclay to schedule the training session.

Cal Mail changes FAQ

Linda asked if there were any concerns regarding the upcoming switch to Cal Mail for those who use the @library.berkeley.edu email. There was a question about whether new hires would get a @library.berkeley.edu or a @berkeley.edu address.

Public PC’s in the Library

Beginning Nov 21st, the Library will be limiting access to .com sites and email on public pc’s at all of the subject specialty libraries, this has already been done in Doe/Moffit. This may have some affect on the Affiliated Libraries who still have open PC’s.

All Affiliated Party

We set a date of Weds Dec 14th, from 4-5:30 for a party with all Affiliated Library staff. It will be in the Goldberg room of the Law Library. Linda will look into caterers and collect funds from all of the Affil Libraries. TALAG members who wish to may bring dessert.

Meeting adjourned. Next TALAG meeting tentatively set for Wed. Dec 7th.
