1. November 3, 2004 TALAG Minutes Approved. (Lowell/Huwe)

2. Announcements:

2.1 - L. Vida announced that the Affiliated Libraries

(http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/AFFIL/) and the TALAG

(http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Staff/talag/) websites were recently updated.

All TALAG please review for changes.

2.2 - Amy Kautzman announced via an email that all of the subjects listed in the Electronic Resource Finder (ERF) have been linked to the proper ERF pages

(http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/find/types/subject_db.html). All TALAG review

as needed.

2.3 W. Lowell announced the formation of an ERF Guidelines Working Group to establish guidelines, policies and procedures for ERF. This Working Group may also be asked to work on issues that affect the Web Advisory Group (WAG)

(http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/find/types/electronic_resources.html). L.Vida

will send out a call for an affiliated representative to serve on this committee.

2.4 A Statistics Advisory Committee is also being formed to assist in refining and revising the statistical definitions and categories used for the annual library statistics call. L.Vida will send out a call for an affiliated representative to serve on this committee.

2.5 L.Vida, W. Lowell and S.Garbarino reported a successful meeting with the ADMIRE group of Doe-Moffitt reference librarians regarding inclusion of Affiliated Library materials and services and this dialog continues. ADMIRE liked the Affiliated Holdings and Circulation grid that is now linked from the Affiliated Web page

2.6 L. Vida reported that a new Library Orientation Leaflet will not be prepared at this time as ample copies still exist. Aija Kanberg will notify us when it is time to print more. The language that we sent her describing Melvyl and Gladis/Pathfinder is too lengthy and will need to be revised at that time. John Kupersmith announced via email that The Library has updated the language used for Melvyl and Gladis/Pathfinder on their web site to more accurately reflect the holdings of each catalog

(http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Catalogs/guide.html). He also expressed a willingness to make any future changes that TALAG might suggest.

3. New WAG implementation.

W. Lowell announced that new templates and an internal vetting process for Library TALAG 2 web pages had been developed. This will probably not affect Affiliated Libraries very much. A new Pathfinder FAQ page appears to be under development and could contain some indication of access to Affiliated Libraries materials as well. WAG is also looking for pertinent issues to address. Send comments to W.Lowell about WAG issues or the Pathfinder FAQ language.

4. Integrated Library System (ILS) discussion from December, 2004 Round Table presentation. L. Vida reported that discussion took place at the Library Round Table meeting in December and January of early planning for an eventual replacement for Pathfinder-Gladis through the purchase of an Integrated Library System (ILS). Discussion of this evidenced that TALAG interest in any ILS remains the inclusion of Affiliated Library cataloging records within an integrated Berkeley Library catalog. Further discussion questioned how a new ILS might be integrated with a wider, multifunctional, electronic resources management system. L. Vida questioned whether the Affiliated Libraries should offer to participate in the committee being created to advise Bernie Hurley on Gladis priorities in the shorter term. L.Vida will draft an email to UL Tom Leonard confirming the Affiliated Libraries longstanding interest in being included in a Berkeley ILS public access catalog and seeking ideas on who else might need to be contacted to confirm our interest.

5. Electronic Journal Subscription.

L.Castillo-Speed recounted her experience with changing an Ethnic Studies Library core journal subscription to include the electronic version with the paper and trying to add this title to Gladis-Pathfinder. The attempt and a corollary suggestion to obtain minimum Gladis cataloging training for several experienced, cataloging staff within ESL met with no success. General discussion resulted in the following actions. L. Castillo-Speed will contact Beth Sibley about this issue. L. Vida will discuss the issue of cataloging electronic journals and training affiliated staff to catalog them with AUL Stirling at their next meeting.

6. Discussion of SLASIAC document Systemwide Strategic Directions for Libraries and Scholarly Information at the University of California. April, 2004. T. Huwe introduced the background and current history of the Strategic Directions document and raised some of the current LAUC commenting and thinking about the direction of Libraries and Scholarly Information at various campuses across the University of California. Reference to the upcoming Panel and Discussion on exactly this topic (February 16, Doe 303, 2:00-4:00 PM with Tom Leonard, Bernie Hurley, Ann Jensen) was raised. Discussion focused on changing librarian skills and training; reference, education and instruction; the nature of shared collections for Affiliated Libraries; meaningful collaboration with CDL processes and products; efficient use of scarce economic and changing technological resources; and the role of highly specialized collections. T.Huwe agreed to draft a letter to LAUC-B President C.Tarr outlining TALAGs viewpoints on several of the directions evident in the Strategic Directions document.

7. Next Meeting.

TALAGs next meeting will be in about two months. The exact date and location will be announced by email.
